Writer's Block: Taxmen and Poetry

It's Tax Day in the U.S., a day when the mind might be too occupied with deductions and long lines at the post office to think about poetry. But let's try: what's your favorite line of poetry? Song lyrics count.

I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul. -Pablo Neruda

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart) -ee cummings

Writer's Block: Unnecessary Objects

Oscar Wilde, a dandy’s dandy, once said that “we live in an age when unnecessary things are our only necessities.” What unnecessary possession can you not live without?

Kody has challenged me to live without air conditioning and all kinds of ridiculous crap that I thought I needed but really I was just buying into our consumer society. There are lots of things that are nice but not necessary and if the evils outweigh the positives... i have to drop it.

I dropped hair dye, make up (except for job interviews), chemicals of almost every sort... petroleum based things like chapstick, dish soap, most plastics...

The one thing I have a hard time giving up is internet access. It makes me feel connected to the world. I'm sure I'll have to keep weeding out new things I think are necessary but definitely aren't... but I fight them off as they come. Hooray for personal growth!
